Resilience Minute

Resilience

the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.

In psychological terms, the word resilience is defined as the ability to bounce back from difficult situations, seemingly unscathed. We all know that isn’t always the case. We may seem capable on the outside while on the inside we are quaking in our boots. Or perhaps we seem fragile externally only to exemplify great fortitude in rough circumstances.

Resilience is a tricky concept to define.

Resilience is seen as innate and acquired. You may have a certain amount depending upon how you were nurtured growing up. You may demonstrate certain capacities for resilience depending upon your genetics (not kidding!)

What we at PLAN are most interested in is the task of building resilience. That’s something we have some control over…

Here are some tips and tricks for building your resilience with a resilience minute:

  • Compassion toward ourselves and others.

  • Taking on new tasks one might see as challenging.

  • Getting enough sleep and eating in a healthy manner

  • Getting some exercise and working on our flexibility through a practice like yoga

  • Meditation and learning to ask the mind/body what it really needs

  • Deep rest and the practice of staying in your own lane, minding your own business.

  • Laughter is medicine.

  • Having a sense of purpose and direction in your life that aligns with your goals.

  • Experiencing the state of AWE – a beautiful sunset, a trip to the Grand Canyon, looking in the eyes of someone you love deeply.

We’d love to hear from you on how you build your resilience. Email us at plancentralohio@gmail.com to be included in our next blog.
